Speaking at the Sernick Group’s annual farmer’s day for emerging farmers near Edenville in the Free State, Steenhuisen said title deeds needed to be given to black farmers as a matter of urgency, as these title deeds were an asset that would allow smaller farmers leverage to access funding.
“Small farmers need to be supported because it is the right thing to do to address economic imbalances and grow the economy. The divide between the two agriculture sectors in the country needs to be bridged,” he said.
He also highlighted that stock theft was a major challenge facing all farmers in the country.
“I have a meeting lined up with the Minister of Police [Edward Senzo Mchunu] this week to address the issue [of stock theft]. We must find ways to disrupt the stock theft chain, like how we disrupted the construction mafia in the country,” Steenhuisen added.
Biosecurity was another issue that needed to be tackled as a matter of urgency, he said.
According to Steenhuisen, the agriculture sector was responsible for safeguarding the industry through the implementation of biosecurity measures, in order to increase export opportunities
